Imagine someone just nearly losing life form a doctor’s mistake in surgery and only a couple months later into recovering a doctor tells them that they have been diagnosed with cancer. That is exactly what happened to Robert Mata.

On March 19, 2012, Robert Mata was informed that he had stage three Multiple Myeloma. Multiple Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that if found in the bone marrow. This type of cancer is uncommon and happens to be only found in one in 143 people and unfortunately Robert Mata happened to be one of them.

According to Robert Mata the cancer was detected when a doctor had noticed that his blood work was off and told him to go to a cancer specialist. After running numerous of test the doctor detected little holes in his spine and if that wasn’t treated soon his spine could snap due to the weak bone. The doctor had called him back in to tell him the results.

"My first thought after the doctor had told me that I have been diagnosed with cancer was what can we do to treat it," said Robert Mata.

Although Robert Mata had past experiences with cancer before he never had even thought that he would be diagnosed with cancer himself. His mom had ovarian cancer and his farther had prostate cancer. Betsy Mata, his wife, had breast cancer a couple years before he was diagnosed.

“It was hard to believe the news because we just got back on our feet only to be pushed back done,” said Betsy.

Apparently Betsy received a call from the doctor who told her that Robert had Multiple Myeloma a week before Robert himself actually found out.

"I was shocked and in disbelief when I heard the news that he was diagnosed with cancer,” Betsy said. "Even though I did anticipate the outcome of test. I was still hoping that it wasn’t going to be cancer."

Although Betsy anticipated the outcome his son, Cameron Mata who was only in 8th grade at the time, didn't expect anything like this. He was only a child when his mom was going through Breast cancer and didn't think that his family would be pulled back into the world of daily hospital visits and chemotherapy treatments again.

"I was shock to say the lease,” said Cameron. “He told me that I would have to be the man of the house and take care of my little sister and mom."

With his caregiver being his wife and his support group being his children, Robert started his first Stem Cell Transplant in the beginning of August in 2012.

“ All that mattered is that we had faith and family with us,” said Cameron.

Robert daily schedule required daily visits to the Southern Methothodes Hospital in San Antonio. There he went through days of chemotherapy and spent most of his time sitting on hospital beds rather then his bed at home.

"The doctors had froze my stem cells and it looked like a bag full of frozen blood," said Robert.

After the stem cells were frozen the rotors gave him chemo through an IV for a couple days before leaving back to were his family was staying to in will return the next day. The nurse had to use a big needle slowly put the stem cells back through his arm. This process was repeated for 15 days straight.

“The needle that she used look to be about 12 inches long and 2 inches in diameter,” Robert explained.

Robert was required to wear a mask to and from the hospital and was told to avoid anybody who was sick due to his extremely weak immune system. Even though this was a long process Robert stayed motivated everyday.

"What kept me motivated everyday was the thought of living and staying alive, “said Robert.

This experience made Robert realize that people had it worst then him. There were so many people at that hospital that had a worst type of cancer that they were fighting.

"I met so many amazing people at the hospital who I really connected to because they understood what I was going though,” Robert said. “All the people were so young and just gave off good vibes and we always kept on fighting though cancer together."

Although in every situation there are some ups and downs. There were times when Robert and Betsy were separated from their children for weeks at time. Their children would be all the way at home in Austin while they would be in San Antonio. But the bad times only made Robert appreciate the good times even more.

"I had to become really responsible when my parents were away and that meant growing up and not being a kid anymore,” said Cameron.

This whole experience was life changing and left an impact on everybody. And after the first stem cell transplant he was told that he had to do another one due to having a certain type of chromosome that had fought off the first stem cell transplant. But he was so happy to have his family there by his aide for all this time.

"I stayed positive because I felt that I needed to show my family that everything was going to be okay and that I would not give up." said Robert. “I had no doubt in my mind that I would not die form this cancer."

He has been fighting cancer for four years now and is finally in remission but he will continue and never stop fighting with his loving family by his side.

“I will never stop fighting in till cancer is only a word used to describe monsters inside of a nightmare instead of a sickness inside reality,” Robert said.

The main part of Homeboy Industries include baking in bakery, cafes, and a catering business. The staff working at Homeboy Industries get internships to go to the Bouchon and is well known.
2. This was compelling to read because it is such a amazing thing to read stories like this about people getting a second chance to change. I think that this was compelling because it showed how not every former gang member are terrible people because when given a chance they work hard to change who they are no matter how old they are. The story gave personal stories of former gang embers and I think that they drawled the reader in because they appealed to my human nature of people getting a second chance because they want to change and not everybody gets another chance to be able to do that.
3. I thought as i was reading this story is how amazing it is that theses people wanted to change who they are and were done with the their life in a gang. I was thinking about how this organization should be located in more areas because it can make such a impact on those peoples lives. 2nd Commentary Article

Fries, burgers, and chicken nuggets sounds good right? Wrong, all theses high fats and high calories  food effects us more than anybody thinks. This generation of people are the highest comsumers of fast food and who wouldn't be with all those tempting commercials but what they don't show is what it does to our body.
Fast food is the easy way to get dinner or a fast meal parents use it to pick up dinner due to not being able to make the meal, teenager get it because maybe it taste better to them then salad. Just turn on the tv and your'll will most commonly see the greasy food advertisement on almost every channel making it just harder to resit it. What the advertisements don't show is the scientific facts on the effect it has on us.
According to the Obesity Action Coalition ever since the 1970 the case of obesity caused by over eating fast food has doubled. A study in 2009 founded out that the risk of having a stroke increased by 1 percent at every fast food restaurants in a Texas neighborhood because fast food is loaded with sodium which increases high blood pressure. Studies put on by Harvard also have found that soft drinks were linked with heart disease.
Not to mention the physical effect fast food has on our bodies. Fast food restaurants are filled with high fats which leads to gaining weight. When it comes to this generation of teenagers self image has been taking over so many young teens lives and fast food plays a huge role in this situation. As more fast food is consumed and weight is put on studies have shown that the confidence of teens has gone down but the insecurities have gone up. It takes a lot of a person to be able to change that habit and if that is not change then the higher the risk is for diabetes and obesity.
Although some fast food restaurants have the availability of salads on their menu it is still considered to be not as heathy as a homemade salad with vegetables and fruits. Fast food restaurants salads are healthier than a regular hamburger but still is high in calories with all the extras involved in the salad. The dressing packs that come with the salads contain many calories and fats that people forget are there.
Due to the high carbohydrates found in fast foods the blood sugar leaves increases. A study shows that with fast food their is a higher risk of eczema in children with habits of eating fast food more commonly. The study also shows that fast food is a trigger for acne. Acids produced by fast foods can destroy teeth enamel which is once lost cannot be replaced.
Fast food causes health risk that could range form minor to major and will only continue to get worst if the greasy food industry continues to grow and grow. Maybe next time someone will think twice of going out and buying a fast food meal after learning the effects it has on us.

Long Answers
1. I think that this is not the best decision by the board because if they miss on error when checking the textbooks then thats wrong information that the students are learning and reading about. In order for students to do well on test and be able to improve their knowledge then they need to be taught the right information without a error to effect them. For the board to vote against this proposal is not the best idea because they are just throwing away and rejecting something that will help the students and make sure they are learning the right information.
2. I think that this is not acceptable at all because it teaches the students that they are just "worker" and that is a far different word then slaves. This is a error that could have been fix and is teaching students the wrong idea of the history. The error is unacceptable and it doesn't matter that it was just a  simple word that was change because that word itself had a whole background of use in history and the students should be able to learn the history without being mislead.
3. I think that the textbooks should be re-checked by expert instead of the board because experts have more information and experience and could be able to fix the errors better. Even in the board there are some other experts that doesn't mean they are experts in that exact field and could have missed some errors when re-checking the textbooks. Experts in the field should re-check the textbooks because then errors would be found better and could be fix so that students don't learn wrong information in the textbooks.
4. I think that my textbooks are accurate but I haven't read the whole textbook yet. I think that experts should re-ckeck the textbooks so that students don't learn the wrong information from errors. Students use textbooks to learn information and the information that we are learning and reading is suppose to be right so if there is a error then that could effect our knowledge on history. I think that in case of a error exports should re-check instead of the board an theses checking should have the correct information in order to find the errors better.
